Windows 7 logoChris Flores, a director with the Windows Client communications team, has confirmed that Microsoft is working on the next major version of Windows, called Windows 7. Flores added,

“We are well into the development process of Windows 7, and we’re happy to report that we’re still on track to ship approximately three years after the general availability of Windows Vista.”

Microsoft released Vista to business community in November 2006 and to consumers the following January.

Microsoft is scheduled to release Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 2 in the first half of 2009. The company claims that the release will expand the list of document formats that it supports to include XML Paper Specification, PDF and Open Document Format (ODF).

Critics, however, are concerned about how “open” and “interoperable” Microsoft will actually be.
